Chronological and Functional Resume Tutorial

December 17th, 2009

resuMe Editor is very flexible and allows you to create different types of resumes. Two of the most popular types of resumes are: chronological and functional resumes. In this tutorial we will outline how to create both types of resumes using resuMe Editor.

Chronological and Functional Resume Definitions:

Chronological Resume:

A chronological resume starts by listing your work history, with the most recent position listed first. Your jobs are listed in reverse chronological order with your current, or most recent job, first. Employers typically prefer this type of resume because it’s easy to see what jobs you have held and when you have worked at them.

Functional Resume:

A functional resume focuses on your skills and experience, rather than on your chronological work history. It is used most often by people who are changing careers or who have gaps in their employment history.

How to create Chronological and Functional resumes with resuMe Editor:

resuMe Editor allows you to create both types of resume by simply reordering sections. For the traditional chronological resume reorder the sections so your work information is listed first. On the other hand reorder your skills section to the top for the functional resume. The samples below were created using resuMe Editor 1.3 (the chronological sample uses resuMe Editor’s modern layout while the functional sample uses the business layout.
